Carmenza is and has always been one fearless courageous woman. I have been blessed to have her as my aunt and ever since I can remember she has inspired my life in every way. When I was little, Tia Carmenza showed the world that she would make it through perseverance and education. Coming from a very poor area in Pereira, Colombia, Carmenza always struggled through the odds. Her father died of old age, while leaving her mother with 11 children at the age of 34. Back then women married really young and most times to older men. Carmenza worked hard and made her family proud by being the first in her family to graduate from College in the US. She then started her own Occupational Therapy practice out in Long Island, NY. After being diagnosed with level 0 breast cancer, she decided to do what she knows best, FIGHT IT! There was never a moment of regret nor defeat. Carmenza took the diagnosis and decided to make some changes in her life. She took on yoga and meditation and decided to teach her daughters (Alexandra-7 and Francesca 9) the practice of meditation and yoga as a new way of living in their household. Carmenza is the driving force in her household, she never lets problems bring her down and she is constantly motivating the world to do achieve their dreams and passiona without ever giving up and always doing it with a smile! My grandmother died happy and proud knowing that her youngest daughter, Carmenza, would never ever give up. Today, my Aunt is an absolute force to be reckoned with, she motivates and inspires young people in our family to follow their dreams and to take action. Life is short and you gotta live it to the fullest. That’s her motto. I love you Tia Carmenza!!!!

I would like to nominate my dear friend, Mayte Prida to have a badge of courage named in her honor. Mayte is a television, web and radio host, author and motivational speaker, and one of the most prominent Hispanic advocates for women and health issues in the country today.
Mayte is a woman, a mother, a friend, a partner. Mayte lives in two worlds, Spanish and English, happiness and pain, adversity and hope. But above all, Mayte is a star that shines on her own.
In 2001 adversity struck Mayte after being diagnosed with breast cancer in an advanced stage at the age of 38. She wrote her ordeal in her first book and documentary “A Difficult Journey, my battle with cancer” and documented her first year fighting the disease with the hopes of helping other women affected by cancer.
Since then, she began a new career. She got herself involved in different women-oriented organizations as well as health issues for minorities.
In 2004 Ford Motor Co. named her Hispanic spokesperson for their national Breast Health Awareness campaign and she began traveling all over the country as a motivational speaker.
Later on in 2006, The Pharmaceutical Research Manufactures of America (PhRMA) named Mayte their first Hispanic spokesperson. She began a national tour as part of their minorities outreach efforts with their patient assistance program PPA.
I am proud to call Mayte my friend and prouder of the strength, courage and love she gives to the world. I love you Mayte!
